/gamergate/ is one of the founding 16 teams of the Infinity Cup, and by far the worst team in Infinity Cup history. With a prestigious record of 0 wins, 0 draws, and 4 losses, and just 3 goals scored in team history as of the end of the Winter 2015 group stages, /gamergate/ is currently the only team in Infinity Cup history (besides one-and-done Summer Cup team /intl/) to have lost every match it has ever played. Although the team showed promise in its opening game against /sp/ and Wade Davis in the Summer 2015 Cup, the game was eventually decided in penalties, which /sp/ won. Since this loss, /gamergate/ has almost futilely stumbled through its matches, losing every one of its group stage matches and scoring just a single goal (versus /kind/ in a 3–1 loss) in its three matches.
In spite of being a founding sixteen member and playing only four matches in a seven month span, the history of team /gamergate/ has had virtually no uplifting moments. Although the team managed to agree to /gamergate/ despite the GGHQ-GGR split earlier in 2015, and Vivian James opened the team's history with the fastest goal in Infinity Cup history (against /sp/, no less!), the team has regularly struggled to be relevant in virtually all facets of virtual divegrass.
Infinity Cup I (Summer 2015)[edit | edit source]
/gamergate/ went into Infinity Cup I as a #3 seed thanks to random.org, putting them in a match with the #14 seed /sp/. Although obviously, /sp/ was the favorite going in, /gamergate/ was hardly a non-contender, something which was quickly proven when a blackface Vivian James opened her and her team's season with the fastest goal in Infinity Cup history (1m 42s). However, this electric opening quickly fell by the wayside as a Bumble Pepe shot in the 18th minute equalized the match for /sp/. In the second half, /sp/ temporarily pulled ahead of /gamergate/ in the 56th minute, but a second Vivian James goal brought it back to a tie game just two minutes later in the 58th minute. Both teams continued to have scoring opportunities for the rest of the half (including several would-be goals that were saved by /sp/ keeper Janitor and /gamergate/ keeper Uncle /pol/), but none found their way into the back of the net, bringing the game to extra time. When neither team could even get a shot on the net for either half, the game came to penalties.
Both teams converted their first three shots, bringing it to 3-3 in penalties. However, a lazy kick by Le Respectful Nodding Man was easily saved by Janitor, opening the door for /sp/. Just like Le Respectful Nodding Man, though, Bumble Pepe's shot was saved, keeping penalties knotted at 3. Usher, /gamergate/'s next kick-taker, subsequently skied one well over the bar, this time opening the door for /sp/ to win it all. With everything on the line, Sepp Blatter drilled his shot down the center as Uncle /pol/ dived left, and /sp/ took the win 4-3 in penalties, eliminating /gamergate/.
Infinity Cup II (Winter 2015)[edit | edit source]
Wade Davis slots one beyond the keeper.
In spite of the loss to /sp/ which eliminated them, /gamergate/ entered the Winter Cup in much the same way it had gone into the Summer Cup. Unusually, however, they were drawn into group H along with /sp/, which resulted in the two teams meeting in their opening game for the second cup in a row. This time, however, /gamergate/ quickly fell behind 1-0 after Wade Davis slotted a beautiful ball beyond the keeper's reach off of a throw in. /sp/ never looked back after the early Wade goal, as /gamergate/ failed to capitalize on any of its opportunities. A late 71st minute goal by Wew solidified /sp/'s victory, and /gamergate/ began its second cup run having been humiliated 2-0 by /sp/.
Still, there remained two games to play against cup newcomers /kind/ and /n/, and /gamergate/ hadn't been effectively eliminated already as /pone/ had in their 6-0 loss to /leftypol/ early that day. Thus, /gamergate/ remained somewhat optimistic. However, the fun was not to last. Another 5th minute goal in the match against /kind/ put /gamergate/ behind early for a second time. A /gamergate/ equalizer by Usher in the 32nd minute gave the team a fleeting hope that a draw or win might still be in the cards, but a late goal in stoppage time by Tender Hugging put /gamergate/ back down 2-1, and /kind/ stormed ahead to an eventual 3-1 victory, leaving /gamergate/ 0-0-2.
Although by this point not technically out of contention, the hope for /gamergate/ was virtually gone. In order to even advance, /gamergate/ required five goals against /n/, when in their prior two matches, they had just one. The end result was predictable -- /gamergate/ scored no goals in the match -- and, although the team held /n/ scoreless for the first half, in the 49th an Otorobot goal essentially sealed /gamergate/'s fate. A late 90+ minute goal by Donald Trump finished /gamergate/ off, completing the 0-0-3 record, and leaving /gamergate/ as the only multi-cup team to lose every match it has ever played.
Being one of the least cared about teams in the entire cup, even by its home board(s), /gamergate/ unsurprisingly came out of Infinity Cup II with no particular game plan for the future, and no intentions of switching up its closely knit team. In the lead-up to Infinity Cup III, however, this "plan" has unraveled massively, putting the team's future in doubt. After splinter board /ggrevolt/ was contacted as a potential expansion (or replacement team) for the cup, a well rounded team was put together for the board, resulting in the emergence of team /ggrevolt/. Not long afterwards, one of /gamergatehq/'s board volunteers also put together a /gamergatehq/ team, effectively completing the GamerGate split. Barring the falling through of team /gamergatehq/, it seems unlikely that /gamergate/ will play another match in the Infinity Cup.

/sp/ - The Rivalry With No Name |
Despite /gamergate/ only playing four games in its entire existence, with half of them being against the /sp/artans, it'd be hard to say there isn't at least a bit of a rivalry between the two teams. Nonetheless, /sp/ has always been the better team, and /gamergate/ maintains a 0-0-2 record throughout.
